Facebook Has Entered The Building

So the check-in game has finally reached the masses. Facebook has legitimized location based services by coupling them together with their online experience with the introduction of Facebook Places. So what now…

Most of the videos I’ve watched like this one with Gowalla’s CTO and articles I’ve read from the launch yesterday to the preliminary reviews today are putting this move in a very good light. It was somewhat expected, but also somewhat surprising to me that I saw such positive reactions from Foursquare and Gowalla who are definitely leading brand names in this space. But, I honestly don’t understand why. I think with facebook’s 500 million users, of which the initial launch is only the US, there is no competition in the long term. Is this one of the more recent display of web politics playing a role in masking the fact that these companies might not stand a chance in the long term given the fact that the 800 Pound Gorilla has entered the room? Or, are they just so excited that this industry has finally been validated and that their businesses are about to see huge growth potential as an end result?

An immense amount of people call Facebook there social home base when it comes to digital life.  Now many more people will have the ability to use this new service that have never been exposed to or ever even heard of before, other than those of us in the Social Media “know” whom have been experimenting with for quite some time now. This leads me to believe that once facebook builds features and adds serious value in order to monetize this, what possible reason would there be for me to go back to a service in which I already push the data out to Facebook itself?  I already scan Facebook and Twitter to see if users are signed up for these services in order to connect, so why not just use it within Facebook and cut out the middle man.

Also, we sure can’t ignore the fact that the win for Bing is huge, as they have partnered with Microsoft’s search engine to power Facebook Places maps. I realized that immediately when I did my first check-in and claimed my business in order to become the admin. Of course it makes sense with Microsoft’s hefty investment in Bing.

It also peaks my curiosity even more as to where the strategy’s motive is coming from. If it wasn’t to be the ultimate leader in the space, why not buy a service, work with them, and be done with it?  Many opinions are that in fact it’s taking this space mainstream. I wholeheartedly hope and believe it truly is. My real question is how are these channels outside the network going to be able to compete with Facebook’s already established social graph?

I suppose loyalty to the original service could play somewhat of a role, but it’s hard to believe that in the end people are going to stay in a different place than where all of their friends are playing. Especially when you consider that average users have not been using or even exposed to such a service before. Most will just now be discovering and undoubtedly excited about a brand new tool they can add and gain value from collectively. That always makes a huge impact. Here’s another video. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents on the inital stages of listening, reading, and hearing what I’ve taken in about the launch of Facebook Places. I really do hope I’m wrong. I have a huge amount of respect for companies like Gowalla and Foursquare. I’ve believed in the value of these services from day one. That being said, they are going to have to make some very big moves if they plan to compete with the juggernaut that is Facebook.  I believe pioneers should win in the end, but I also know that’s often not the case in the long term. My hope is that this will escalate an entire space to new heights never seen before all thanks to Facebook’s final, but late to the game, initiative. I just find it fascinating how it’s being received in the very early stages.

I’d love to know your thoughts and opinions on how you think Facebook “Entering the Building” and “Checking-In” to Location Based Social Networking will help or hurt the rest of the players and their user base.

    Interesting to see a giant jumping on the bandwagon. I do not think that foursquare will be hurt in the long run. Just like twitter vs. facebook updates and youtube vs. facebook video, I think that foursquare will win in the long run. Although I like facebook, I think its safe to say that facebook seems to always be trying to play its cards everywhere.

    It's like some rich kid running back and forth from blackjack, holdem, and craps tables all at once. Unable to make up is mind where he wants to sit… like he wants to be everywhere.

    Sure, facebook has a great platform which I love using, but why not try to create something new for users rather than try to latch on to what your users are trying to do elsewhere?

    I like how you put it about being everything to everyone, but I am on the fence on how it will play out. I know one thing…nobody knows for sure for now. But due to the fact and the amount of exposure to the new users that have not been shown these types of service is the one really powerful thing that really makes me wonder how it will truly play out in the end. When Google tried Buzz, it was mass excitement at first, but as we all know and they once again proved it again… they aren't good at social like facebook truly is. LBS is very social. So anyway, it will be fun to watch and see what happens, it's usually the opposite of what I think :) Thanks for your thoughts, as always a pleasure. Appreciate you taking the time! DG

    It is going to boil down to the rewards that these services provide to their users and how excited the user base becomes. I believe that FB is just getting into the area for the api's and eventually gowalla and foursquare will start using those in there services…

    Also I have found that facebook is not really the place to always “check in”. A twitter feed to me makes much more sense as a way to share my minute to minute location…. And even then i dont always post my gowalla or foursquare location to twitter.

    This is an amazing and growing space and I can not wait to see where this all goes. Another player to consider is apple itself with the iAd service and their location aware devices.

    Thanks for the insight Michael. I agree on the notion of the checking in and where to post is a key factor in this puzzle. I myself used to post almost every single checkin to Twitter, but only limited to Facebook. Now I keep it on the LBS networks themselves most of the time, unless it is truly an interesting place. That was probably due to the fact it was new to me and many other users at first and that excitement factor, which now is going to another round of folks, might have a positive effect for facebook's user base which isn't already use to this stuff like us.     I'm still a bit slow on the uptake for a lot of this stuff but will this be bad news for Twitter? Will Facebooks increased mobility mean people will do their “twittering”via Facebook or will there still be a need for both?

    Hey Tony! Thanks for taking the time and stopping by. I don't necessarily think this will effect Twitter in the sense that checkins are done from other service mainly and pushed out to them. Twitter has tried to get people to turn on their location from within the service but hasn't really caught on for most of us. The one interesting fact though is that people never exposed to checkin type service are now give that option on Facebook which is definitely the masses. So we'll see, have you noticed your friends on facebook using it alot? I do somewhat but not the numbers I initially thought I would. I guess time will tell, but definitely fun to watch the progression of it all. Once again, thanks for taking the time! Hope your weekend is a great one, Respectfully _DG
